Flash Fiction: Burned, a 250-word short story

His blood called to my blood like a magnetic current. No matter how much I tried to fight, I couldn’t escape his pull. My body moved towards him without my permission. My chest felt tight and my heart raced as if trying to explode out of my chest.

I stood in front of him shacking slightly as he surveyed my nightdress with his shining golden eyes.

He was a strong and powerful delantie, blessed with earthly powers far superior to any other being in existence and still young at 240 years. I was an ordinary 24-year-old human female.

He gave me a look that was dark and deep with desire and I knew the pure bliss that was to follow. But I wasn’t going to make it out of the night’s visit unscathed, I never did.

The more we were together, the more I burned for him when we were apart. I was terrified of the consequences of our union, a union I’d only ever known to end in death, usually for the human when their body was shredded by the earth power realised by the delantie in the heat of the moment.

I woke up the next morning, naked and alone, feeling even more hollow then the time before. But I had made it through. I knew that the burning need to be with him would begin building again. I knew that he would appear again and so the cycle would continue until he had burned me up completely.

The Narnian Edition:

Narnia: a magical land created by C.S. Lewis in 1955. Populated by talking animals and mythical creatures, sometimes visited by humans through magic portals hidden in ordinary objects like wardrobes. And a place where adults wish they could escape to from time to time and be kids again!

Oops my bad!

My inner child still goes to Narnia, but the Tardis and Hogwarts are both close seconds!

Lets be all grown up and serious now – here are some C.S. Lewis quotes.

Well that got a little deep!

babble3The “It had to be done” Edition:

The Twilight Saga movies would have to be the most meme’d book to movie adaptation of all time. There are so many meme’s bagging the shit out of the series. So today’s task wasn’t finding content for this Babble, because the content is endless, but finding funny or intelligent content – well yeah, that’s wasn’t so easy.

I purposely went looking for the Raptor watches Edward watching Bella meme because I remember finding it amusing the first time I saw it.

That then lead to a bunch of Raptor and Dino memes that were much better than the twilight ones.

Hehehehehehe…

Oh yeah, “bookish” babble – Back to Twilight.

Yeah OK, I did laugh the first time I saw this one!

Yeah valid point meme maker, valid point.

DAMN! I hadn’t even thought about that until I saw this meme for the first time today haha.

funny twilight meme creep

Yeah… Who’s up for more Raptor Memes? ME!

How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

IMG_3817IMG_3876IMG_3823IMG_3822IMG_3816How to Train Your Dragon (How to Train Your Dragon #1) by Cressida Cowell

Hiccup Haddock Horrendous III was a truly extraordinary Viking hero.

The warrior chieftain and awesome sword fighter was known as ‘the Dragon Whisperer’, on account of his power over these terrifying beasts.

But it wasn’t always like that, and this is the story of his rise to fame, in his own words.

* ~ * My Thoughts * ~ *

Book Toothless and Movie Toothless are very different creatures. The only book characters who remotely resemble themselves in the movie are Hiccup and Gobber. And the way the young Vikings come to have their dragons is completely different.

Hiccup is still the Outsider wanting to fit in, the unlikely hero, the underdog etc. Astrid and Ruffnut are no where to be seen, no girls are – I love Astrid and Ruffnut so that was a little disappointing.

All that said this book was adorable! The book series is listed for ages 6 to 10 – I would have devoured this series at around eight years old.

We follow hiccup as an initiate competing for the right to become a full member of his father’s tribe or be banished from the isle of Berk forever. We see hiccup along with all the other boys go off to catch a dragon that they must then train and use to compete. Obviously Toothless does not cooperate in this matter and what follows is humorous tale of mishaps and triumphs.

There is still a enormous dragon showdown with Hiccup and Toothless still getting to be the heroes of the story.

After I had bought the paperback I found out that David Tennent voices the audio books. If I had to pick one thing that would have made me enjoy this book more, it would be having David Tennent read it to me! As is i’m going to give it Four Stars.

Summer Skin by Kirsty Eagar

26211610Summer Skin by Kirsty Eagar

Paperback, 352 pages
Published February 1st 2016 by Allen & Unwin
* * * * * *

Jess Gordon is out for revenge. Last year the jocks from Knights College tried to shame her best friend. This year she and a hand-picked college girl gang are going to get even.

The lesson: don’t mess with Unity girls.

The target: Blondie, a typical Knights stud, arrogant, cold . . . and smart enough to keep up with Jess.

A neo-riot grrl with a penchant for fanning the flames meets a rugby-playing sexist pig – sworn enemies or two people who happen to find each other when they’re at their most vulnerable?

It’s all Girl meets Boy, Girl steals from Boy, seduces Boy, ties Boy to a chair and burns Boy’s stuff. Just your typical love story.

A searingly honest and achingly funny story about love and sex amid the hotbed of university colleges by the award-winning author of Raw Blue.

“Taking a keen look at modern day intimacy in a hook-up culture, Summer Skin expertly shatters notions of slut shaming and the pull of sexual desire. Realistic, modern and moving, the story of Jess and Mitch is as smart as it is hot. Kirsty Eagar has written the feminist love story that girls have been waiting for.” Clementine Ford

Capture * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * My Thoughts * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

When Jess and Mitch first meet it is a truly awkward cringe worthy moment – a real moment.

Summer Skin’s story was believable and the characters felt real. While Jess and Mitch’s burning then blooming romance pushes the story along, a lot of issues that face young adults these days are touched on in a realistic and un-preachy manner. Well Done Kirsty Eagar.

It was hideously beautiful! It made me thank the stars above that I’m not 19 anymore, while at the same time making me wish I still was.

I’d say it’s more suited to a 15-25 age range. I’m not saying that if your older you won’t enjoy it, you still will, I still did. I’m just saying that age bracket because If I had read this when I was the main character’s age, it would have blown me away.CbNv-YWUkAAPADg

The Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

This is the first time I’ve tried to do a whole series review as appose to each book separately, so let’s see how this goes.

books-beautifulcreatures

The first book, Beautiful Creatures, follows Ethan and Lena as they discover each other and the connection that ties them together. We see Ethan plunged into a magical world he never knew existed and Lena escape being claimed. We meet many influential characters, including Lena’s Dark Caster mother, Sarafine. The main characters all bar one survive Lena’s 16th birthday and there are plenty of loose ends to drive you in to reading the second book, Beautiful Darkness.

The second book is non-stop, action packed and improves on the first. In The first book a large chunk of the story was set around Ethan and Lena’s experience at school, where as in the second book it is nearly entirely set in the underground Caster world. We keep all the characters we’ve previously met and more are thrown into the mix; the mysterious John, undead Abraham and adorable Liv, just to name a few. We find out the truth about Ethan’s mother’s death and her involvement with Macon, as well as some secrets about Ethan’s own special destiny.

Set between the second and third Caster Chronicles is Dream Dark, Link’s transformation novella. In this we see Link learning to handle his new semi-Incubus self and taking his first steps solo in the paranormal underworld as an adorable “Linkubus”.

In the third book, Beautiful Chaos, we find out about Abraham’s master plan which has been years and years in the making, to destroy the caster and mortal world. Ridley runs off, John’s trapped, Lena and Liv make peace, Amma goes mad, aunt Prue dies and Ethan has a run in with the wheel of fate. In the end we are left answer-less with a killer cliff hanger ending.

The forth book, Beautiful Redemption is by far the best book in the series. The story is told by both Lena and Ethan, which was a nice surprise as Ethan has narrated all the others. We journey with Ethan through the otherworld. We see him reunited with his mother and aunt Pure in death and we see him fight his way back to the land of the living. We see Lena deciphering the messages Ethan sends her from beyond the grave and together with all the loved ones Ethan left behind they send him the help he needs to defeat the ones who destined him to die.

You know how some last books in a series can be a letdown, Beautiful Redemption was the opposite – it went above my expectations. All my questions were answered and everything felt balanced and whole by the end. It certainly was a beautiful ending.

I read the books over a five-month period with others in-between, rather than devouring them one after another in a binge like I normally would. I’d give the series a four-star rating as a whole. I really liked it, but was capable of not marathon-ing it. I’m happy I read all five, they were well worth the read. I don’t intend on reading the spin off series Dangerous Creatures which follows Ridley and Link’s life after the events of the Beautiful Creatures series, but I am thinking that I will add Beautiful Redemption to my re-read list, yes I enjoyed it that much!
