REV GIRL by Leigh Hutton

REV GIRL (The Go Girls Chronicles, #1) by Leigh Hutton

Wow I truly loved this book. Flat out Five stars. Now I’ve got the hard task of explaining to you all how truly awesome this book is and making you fall in love with it so you’ll go out and buy it.

Here it goes >>

rev girl

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Inspired by a true story

It’s hard to be the new girl, but it’s even harder being the new girl who races dirt bikes . . .

Ever since her parents forced her to move from Canada to Silvertown, Colorado, Clover Kassedy hasn’t fit in. So how do you deal when everyone hates you?

Focusing all her energy on racing her motorcycle did it for a while, but now that Clover’s managed to find a bestie and a boyfriend, the pressure on the sixteen-year-old is worse than ever.

She’s determined to get to the World Championships, where she could finally meet her idol – an Australian, the World Champion – and have a shot at becoming a professional dirt bike racer. But with her super- competitive dad, workaholic mother and relentless bullies at races and at high school, Clover is struggling to make her dreams a reality.

Will it be her scheming ex-best-friend who shatters her world? Or will she let her ‘perfect’ boyfriend – the guy who has finally made her feel like she belongs in their school and their town – stop her from becoming an international racing star?

My Thoughts:

I loved it. The way Leigh explains the thoughts and feelings Clover goes through during races you can tell that she has been there and done it. It feels real. The story is full of passion and excitement, a real page turner. You can’t help but fall in love with Clover and want her to succeed on her journey.

There are laugh out loud lines throughout the book.

Ernie and Shazza’s dad, John Watson, hit it off like a pair of escaped convicts who just stumbled upon a burlesque bar.

Girls all around her were dropping like Louis Vuitton handbags at a ‘$50 for Everything Sale’.

And there are some truly beautiful inspiring lines as well.

Being dead isn’t just lying in the dirt, your eyes rolled back in your head. You die inside when you give up on what you truly love. On yourself. Find who you are and hold onto it.

I love the in-depth speech Clover gave in the story. It was heartfelt and true. It resonated with me down to my core. I wish that at seventeen I’d known myself as well as Clover comes to. It took me twenty six years and postnatal depression after the birth of my son for me to find myself, to love myself, to have the courage to start working towards my dreams, as I am now.

I think it should be mandatory for teenage girls to read this story. There is something every one of them can relate to, regardless if they’re not into Motor Bikes or Extreme Sports. Being a teenager is hard and it sucks, but unless you can learn to love yourself life just gets harder.

This book has everything; Romance, Action Adventure and tones of Girl Power.

I love that Leigh has managed through this book to teach us a lesson about pride, power, love, loss, peer pressure, friendship, bullying and life changing decisions and have us ENJOY IT!

A brilliant start to what I’m sure will be a brilliant series.

And now from Leigh’s website www.leighuttonbooks.com a bit about the Go Girl Chronicles:go girls

Cindy: Friday Fictioneers 100 word story challenge

As Cindy looked out of the castle she knew what she needed to do.

She would go and return her heart to the only boy that was ever true.

Although Billy hadn’t a dollar to his name.

She jumped on one of the maids bicycles and rode off in the rain.

When she got to Billy’s he was so happy that she no longer felt afraid.

Billy the poor beggar boy would be the next king after that day.

The Royal Family would have to accept him now, there was no other way.

They ran off and eloped that very day.

Writing Update

I’m currently in the process of finalizing my second poetry eBook ‘The World Around Me’. I’m also in the process of creating a Tree Book that merges my two eBook collections together, but I’m struggling to come up with a name I’m happy with so that makes it a bit hard to go forward with any art work LOL. I will / must have these two books published before July, as In July I’ll be starting studying for a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety and will be flat out trying to tackle that as fast as possible. Once I’ve got my WH&S certification I intend to focus on my fiction writing. I’ve got a whole world that has been floating around in my head since I was a little girl and I’m determined to get it out (or die trying). I’ve also got a short story and two flash fiction pieces that I really enjoyed writing and I want to see if I can extend them with the possibility of turning them into Novellas.

Jemma: Friday Fictioneers 100 word story challenge

Jemma stared out into the morning fog and just absorbed the beauty that was Calabash Station.

She’d gone into the west paddock early that morning looking for a stray sheep. Billy had left the gate open again. That irresistible idiot Billy, Jemma really wasn’t sure what she was going to do with him.

As the fog began to recede she saw the sheep grazing below.

Jemma and her horse Pinto returned the sheep to its paddock and securely shut the gate.

Jemma looked at her watch and smiled. She still had enough time to go and have breakfast with Billy.

Dandelion’s Play

photo 1 (2)Yesterday I introduced Riley to his first Dandelion

When I first handed it to him to meet it

He quickly tried to eat it

Then crushed it in his hand and watched the fluff float away

Whenever I pass by a dandelion

The little girl inside me starts a crying

And I must pluck that dandelion and play

Make a wish and blow the fluff away

I always wish for the same thing

And my heart always sings as I watch the fluff float away

Next time you see a dandelion make sure you stop and greet it

Pick it up and meet it

Make a wish and watch your worries float away

A dandelion can grow just about anywhere they truly are a remarkable plant. Every part of the dandelion is useful: root, leaves and flower. It can be used for food, medicine and dye for colouring.

The dandelion is the only flower that represents the 3 celestial bodies of the sun, moon and stars. The yellow flower resembles the sun, the puff ball resembles the moon and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars.

Initiate (The Unfinished Song #1) by Tara Maya

Synopsis:

The initiation ceremony is the gateway to ultimate power…or death. A DETERMINED GIRL Dindi can’t do anything right, maybe because she spends more time dancing with pixies than doing her chores. Her clan hopes to marry her off and settle her down, but she dreams of becoming a Tavaedi, one of the powerful warrior-dancers whose secret magics are revealed only to those who pass a mysterious Test during the Initiation ceremony. The problem? No-one in Dindi’s clan has ever passed the Test. Her grandmother died trying. But Dindi has a plan… AN EXILED WARRIOR Kavio is the most powerful warrior-dancer in Faearth, but when he is exiled from the tribehold for a crime he didn’t commit, he decides to shed his old life. If roving cannibals and hexers don’t kill him first, this is his chance to escape the shadow of his father’s wars and his mother’s curse. But when he rescues a young Initiate girl, he finds himself drawn into as deadly a plot as any he left behind. He must decide whether to walk away or fight for her… assuming she would even accept the help of an exile.

My thoughts:

Oh clever, cheeky Tara Maya giving us the first part of a twelve part series for free so we fall in love with it and buy the rest (only up to book six is published at the moment).

If Faeries (Fairies) or, secret societies and dancing aren’t your thing, don’t bother with this book. But if you want to be swept up in a beautiful but brutal world of fancy, love, betrayal and magic, then head on over to Smashwords and download a copy. It’s free for goodness sake why not!!! If you don’t like it you haven’t wasted anything other than a little bit of time and you do like it you might have just found yourself a new favourite fancy world and many hours or reading pleasure with this series.

For the most part this book is set up for the series, so a lot of information is packed in. It does seem to me that this will be an epic series. I dare say the next book will be even better as I seems to have been set up to be full of danger and action.

At the end of this book Tara’s included the first chapter of the second book ‘’Taboo’’ as if we needed more incentive to go out and buy the second anyway LOL. Well I’m off to Smashwords to Purchase the next book “Taboo” and add it to my *2 read list* and see if this adventure is all it’s cracked up to be.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Synopsis:

Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine’s father. After Mr Earnshaw’s death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine’s brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

My Thoughts:

Almost demonic!! Their love is demonic, especially on Heathcliff’s side.

At times the book is filled with pointless ramblings and unlovable characters, but still you find you are compelled to read it till the end.

This is the second time I’ve read Wuthering Heights. The first time was when I was fifteen and now again at twenty seven. I’m glad I’ve read it a second time, I definitely appreciated it more and sometime down the track, perhaps in another twelve years, I’ll read it again.

While I was reading it I hated Heathcliff and Catherine but when all was said and done and I was reflecting to write this review I found myself growing fonder of them. I guess it would be wrong to hate them because their behaviour when it was there surroundings that made them behave so, BUT I really don’t want to excuse their disgusting behaviour.

This is definitely not a knight in shining armour love story or a light and happy one. Maybe because it’s not fairy tale it’s more true to real life? Because love can hurt and families can be horrid to one another. The real world sucks so I like my books to create an escape to a better place.

For me to fall in love with a book, I have to fall in love with the characters or at least like them.

I loved Elizabeth & Jane Bennet (oh and that divine Mr Darcy) so I Loved Pride & Prejudice.

I’ve got a thing for that power house Jack Reacher and hence enjoy Mr Child’s Reacher series.

Hell I even fell in love with Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black.

But what does Ms Bronte give us;

Heathcliff – Manic Evil Psychopath. He really is the main character for the most part. We find out all about his long twisted love affair and his sick fancy to destroy the happiness of everyone around him. I mean come on, the sick bastard gets Catherine’s coffin opened up eighteen years after her death just to look at her What The F#*k! Who does that? A crazy psychopath called Heathcliff driven by a demonic love, that’s who!!

Catherine (the 1st) – Well she isn’t much better than Heathcliff. She’s given everything under the sun and still carries on like a little bitch.

Edgar Linton – A bland stupid but sweet man

Hindley Earnshaw – Weak drunken waste of a man

Mr Lockwood – Nosy busybody, who the story could do without completely. He really is pointless! Just let Nelly tell the story without him at all. The dude moves into a new area and then sets about harassing his maid to give him all the gossip on his landlord and the Wuthering Heights residents. Yeah and that’s the whole premise for the retelling of the story.

Joseph – (I dislike this character the most) Mean spirited long winded god fearing douche bag without a heart.

Isabella Linton – Stupid stupid girl

Linton Heathcliff – Scared sickly traitorous whingeing wretch

The only characters to deserve compassion are: Nelly ‘Ellen’ Dean, Catherine (the 2nd) and Hareton Earnshaw – thank goodness they get a happy ending.

Now I’m being very harsh, I did actually enjoying reading this story and once it was over and I was reflecting on it, I decided I did in fact LIKE the book and yes one day I would read it again LOL.

So yes I did enjoy it, but I really can’t pin point why! I can bitch about the things that irked me. I can understand Cathy and Heathcliff, but I can’t love them. It’s nice to end with Nelly, Hearton and Cathy coming together. The last three or four chapters about them make reading the book worthwhile, at least that is how I felt after I immediately finished reading it. But still I’m drawn back to thinking about Heathcliff and Cathy. I will admit if I wasn’t for all the dark, hatred and mistreatment throughout the story the ending wouldn’t have been so light, happy and wished for.

I think this book will always sit uneasily with me. I can’t decide if its 2 stars (it was ok) 3 stars (I liked it) or 4 stars (I really liked it) – It’s definitely not 1 star hate it or 5 star Love it, so at least I can narrow it down LOL. But I did like it so I’ll just go with 3 stars and leave it at that.

WOW I think I ramble on a bit too much here :-I my apologies people.
