My Thoughts mk3

I had never heard of Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files until Down Town came up on NetGalley, so I had to do some research. The Dresden Files is an urban fantasy series telling the story of Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only Wizard P.I. The files currently comprise of 15 novels (books), each book being a standalone story and 6 graphic novels (comics), two of which are graphic versions of first two novels and the rest being standalone stories.

Down Town is a standalone graphic novel set after White Night, book 9. Some people have said that the series should be read in order, as each story has references to the previous. I could still follow the story and understand what was going on without having read any of the others.

I liked the artwork and was entertained by the story line. The golem was interesting, as was the whole “under town” concept. If I had read some of the earlier books I may have had more of a connection to the characters and enjoyed this story even more.

So while I wasn’t blown away with Down Town I did enjoy reading it and am going to give Storm Front the first in the series a go. Three “I liked it” Stars – Worth a look at if you’re a paranormal vigilante lover.

Frost by E. Latimer *Launch Blog Tour*

Frost-Tour-Banner-FIRST THINGS FIRST; I’m going hand this post over to Erin with: 5 Facts You Didn’t Know About Norse Mythology.

* * * * *

norse

Okay, okay, this is five facts that most people don’t know.

You know, I get it. Good for you, have a t-shirt made or something.

Right, now that the wiseguy is gone, let’s get started.

  • Thor was a red head

If you didn’t already think red heads were awesome, you should now! When most people think of Thor, they think of the hammer-swinging god as a blond man (way to go, Marvel) but the old stories suggest that Thor was actually a carrot top with a bushy beard, not the clean-shaven hunk we love so much.

  • The World is a Giant Frigging Tree

Okay that’s not quite accurate. The world is ON a giant frigging tree, and it’s not actually one world, its nine, all suspended on “the world tree” like giant apples. If apples were full of jotun and dwarves and dark elves and humans.

  • Thor dressed in Drag Occasionally

And that bushy red-headed bro probably looked fiiiiine. When a big jerk-face (the giant Pyrmy) stole Thor’s hammer and would only give it back if he got to marry Freyja, Thor took things into his own manicured hands. He dressed up in drag and pretended to be the goddess. They got hitched, and then Thor laid the smack down on the giant.

No need to sign the divorce papers!

  • Loki Can Swap Genders (and Species)

The gods didn’t limit themselves to the occasional drag session, they also swapped genders pretty frequently. Loki himself was both the mother AND father of several children (which included wolves, giant serpents and eight-legged stallions, but that’s another weird fact for another day) he also changed species whenever it suited his plans.

  • Odin Had Pet Ravens

Since Odin gave up one of his eyes for a drink (okay, it was from the well of Mimir for wisdom, so he gets a pass) he employed two ravens to fly around the world and bring him information. The ravens names were Huginn and Muninn, and Odin is occasionally referred to as “raven god” because of them.

Best nickname ever.

Synopsis:

Megan Walker’s touch has turned to ice. She can’t stop the frost, and the consequences of her first kiss are horrifying.

When her new powers attract attention, Megan finds herself caught up in an ancient war between Norse giants. One side fueled by a mad queen’s obsession and an ancient prophecy about Ragnarök, the other by an age-old grudge. Both sides believe Megan to be something she’s not. Both sides will stop at nothing to have her.

Fire or frost. It’s an impossible decision, but she’ll have to act soon, because the storm is coming.

Today we are celebrating E. Latimer’s debut novel, Frost, a young adult fantasy based on Norse Mythology about a teen who accidentally freezes the first boy she kisses. It’s not long until she discovers her family tree is a little…weirder than expected.

For original fans of Frost (which was originally uploaded on Wattpad), you’ll see some of your favorite characters and moments in an entirely new light! Make sure to add Frost to your “to read” on GoodReads.

My Thoughts mk3

In this story we get average seventeen year old Megan finding out she’s not so average, escaping from an attempted kidnapping, finding a parallel dimension with a kingdom of somewhat hostile ice giants (jotuns) and their villainous queen. Not to mention kissing a cute fire jotun, surviving an assassination attempt and finding true friendship.

The opening of the story sucked me in and the ending finished strong. The story is fast paced, action packed and easy to follow. The good guys are easily likable and the bad guys are horrendous and detestable, just the way it should be. I found I had more of an affinity towards the fire jotun, Loki then towards any of the Ice jotun’s or human half breads, but I can see the main character Megan developing into a strong female heroine as the series progresses.

While all up the story didn’t blow me away, it was a fast and fun read which has me looking forward to seeing what happens in book number two.

So a BIG thank you to Harper Collins and Mitchell Hogan for allowing me a copy of this book to read and review!

This edition published the 1st of September 2015 by Harper Voyager (an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers)

Synopsis mk3

An imaginative new talent makes his debut with the acclaimed first installment in the epic Sorcery Ascendant Sequence, a mesmerizing tale of high fantasy that combines magic, malevolence, and mystery

After young Caldan’s parents are brutally slain, the boy is raised by monks who initiate him into the arcane mysteries of sorcery.

Growing up plagued by questions about his past, Caldan vows to discover who his parents were, and why they were killed. The search will take him beyond the walls of the monastery, into the unfamiliar and dangerous chaos of city life. With nothing to his name but a pair of mysterious heirlooms and a handful of coins, he must prove his talent to become apprenticed to a guild of sorcerers.

But the world outside the monastery is a darker place than he ever imagined, and his treasured sorcery has disturbing depths he does not fully understand. As a shadowy evil manipulates the unwary and forbidden powers are unleashed, Caldan is plunged into an age-old conflict that will bring the world to the edge of destruction. Soon, he must choose a side—and face the true cost of uncovering his past.

3c83e-addtogoodreadsMy Thoughts mk3

Far out this book was stressful! My dreams were haunted by the characters – and I don’t mean either of those as a bad things.

From the synopsis I thought this book was going to be all about Caldan, but it’s much bigger than that. The prologue sucked me in straightaway; I didn’t know who these people were but I wanted them safe. Not too many pages in and we find out the prologue people were in fact Caldan Grandparents and Mother. It was obvious they had to be some sort of ancestors to Caldan as it was the perfect way to kick the story off, giving us a glimpse into the past. I will add that Grandma and Granddad were kickass powerful. In this first book we never find out exactly by who their killers were or why they were killed. But I’m sure that will be brought up in the second or third book as Caldan strives to find out the truth behind his heritage.

Extremely early on Caldan is forced to leave the monastery thanks to a kafuffle with one of the other students. We travel with Caldan from the sheltered monastery to big bad Anasoma. In Anasoma Caldan learns the ways of his new home the hard way when he gets mugged and receives a serious ass whooping when he accidentally wanders into the slums. Never the less he makes some friends in Miranda, the love interest, and Master Simmon, who goes on to give him the unprecedented position of Apprentice Protector.

So we’ve gone through 100 pages following Caldan only to move onto another set of characters. At first I couldn’t figure out what was going on, but as Aidan’s chapters continued it became evident the importance of his actions and that we were being shown things that were going on in the background of Caldan’s world. We follow Caldan for a few more chapters then we get dropped someone new again, Amerdan, and again with, Vasile. Now following four story lines we really start to see the rich and complex world Mr Hogan has created. We meet so many intricate and important characters but the story still manages to flow well and remain easy to read/understand.

We spend most of the time with Caldan but every now and then check in with the others to keep a broad view of what is happening. In this book Caldan’s and Amerdan paths cross, Aidan and Vasile’s cross, but the four never end up together, it seems enviable that they will at some point during the series.

So while only Caldan is mentioned in the synopsis and yes we probably spend the biggest percentage of the book with him, the other three charters and their stories lines are extremely important to the world Hogan immaculately builds.

Towards the end of this book Caldan shows just how powerful he is and because of this I think he’s in a lot more danger then he realises. I am really on edge about the traveling party Caldan is with at the end of the book, in which Amerdan is included, it can only mean trouble. Poor Miranda is left brain dead from evil sorcery. And I was left questioning who the bad guys really were. There are a fair few things left open at the end of this book and it sets up some epic show downs and discoveries to come.4s

When he was eleven, Mitchell Hogan was given the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to read, and a love of fantasy novels was born. He spent the next ten years reading, rolling dice, and playing computer games, with some school and university thrown in. Along the way he accumulated numerous bookcases’ worth of fantasy and sci-fi novels and doesn’t look to stop anytime soon.

His first attempt at writing fantasy was an abysmal failure and abandoned after only one page. But ideas for characters and scenes continued to come to him and he kept detailed notes of his thoughts, on the off chance that one day he might have time to write a novel. For a decade he put off his dream of writing until he couldn’t stand it anymore. He now writes full time and is eternally grateful to the readers who took a chance on an unknown author.

Mitchell lives in Sydney, Australia, with his wife, Angela, and daughter, Isabelle.

*Coming Soon* Pledged by Louise G. White

Pledged twit1

I’m super excited about this release as I really liked the first two books in the series.

Hi Res Pledged

The deal was simple: Carolyn and her friends could return home after 21 days. What could happen in 3 short weeks?

Rather a lot: Carolyn’s mother is livid about her “rescue” and Edward is being groomed for a chiefdom he doesn’t want. The Agency’s “elixir of life” has been perfected, and O.W.E. permits mean that certain humans have been authorised to work in the demon realms.

pledged twit2 copy

Pledged will be available for purchase from Amazon on the 22nd of October.

While we’re waiting lets take a look back.

23380120The Calling: On the run and hiding from ‘the suits’, Carolyn’s life is far from straightforward. After her mother and brother go missing in a most extraordinary way, (through a hole to another world which appears in the kitchen wall!), she is determined to track them down and bring them home. But life is never that easy! Rescued and protected by a group of unusual and like minded ‘people’, Carolyn hones her magic and fighting skills. Whilst answering a ‘call’ to retrieve a human from another world she’s faced with a quick decision and ends up bringing a demon back with her. Little did she know what effect this demon would have on her. As each day passes her strengths grow and her magic develops to assist her in her quest to track down her family, but there are decisions to make that will affect the rest of her life. GOODREADS

23454772Chasing the Demon: The system has been changing; the Agency flaunts its cruel practices, and the balance of the realms has been disrupted. Ethan’s enforcers are already stretched to the limits, and things get worse when alliances are forged between the worst of the demon realms. Meanwhile, on Empustat, Carolyn has spent an entire year being “reconditioned” – her memories being wiped and replaced in order to produce a limited and vapid princess. Under the constraints of the Chief, she is no longer the feared and mythical “destroyer” Carolyn’s life of privilege is marred only by the expectations held for her to marry Peter and produce heirs for the realm. Her friend, Mario, in contrast, has suffered hardship and humiliation at the hands of the Lilim guard – and a chance encounter will spur Carolyn’s awakening. The disabled gateway has frustrated the team’s efforts to reach Carolyn, and Ethan and Note can barely tolerate each other, but both mage and demon share the same goals. Hope by way of an unexpected source leads to the team embarking on a plan so daring that their survival hangs in the balance. With old and new friends from the realms, the fight for order continues. Bookish Babble Y15.W1

I’m so sporadic with posting on my blog; with no real regularity to my reviews and I can be a little slack in my partaking of Top Ten Tuesday and Friday Fictioneers. I want a permanent every week piece I can actually keep up for the long term.

Bookish Babble is a post I’m going to do every Sunday – It’ll be my version of going to church – I intend to share book related quotes, facts, jokes and ecards that I find and like.

I know there are a fair few bloggers out there that do a similar thing, Friday funnies that are book related etc. I devour so much bookish content from my different social media platforms and by doing this Bookish Babble post I now have a legitimate reason to spend so long trolling the internet :-).
