Weekly Writing Challenge: Object

As I look around my desk trying to decide on an object I pick up my thermos and have a drink.

My Thermos. I love my Thermos, so why not talk about it. It’s a shiny midnight blue steel 750 ml container – so it’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but it’s functional. I was told when I bought it that it would give me 12 of heat and 24 hours of cold retention. I bought my thermos late last year at a 4wd, Fishing and Camping Expo that my husband, my baby son and I attended. There were a great number of things I would have liked to have purchased at that expo, but I was a good girl and only came away with the thermos (my husband did buy a bunch of other camping equipment).

I learnt the hard way with heat. I made a cup of coffee, poured it into my thermos and took it to work. After about two hours I gave up and tipped it into a regular mug so it would cool down enough so I could drink it. Now if I choose to put coffee in it I make it drinking temperature. Mainly though I just use my thermos as a drink bottle. I rarely manage to drink as much water as I should, but with the water being kept cold I end up drinking more, Yay!

Now just for fun – An ode to my Thermos:

Oh Thermos all shiny and blue

You keep my water cold

How much I love you

Your stainless steel construction

Makes you nice and tough

Which is a good thing because I’m careless

And your life is pretty rough

I fill you up with cold water

And toss you in the car

You bounce and roll all over the place

And it leaves not a dent or a scar

Oh my gosh your awesome

Oh how much I love you

I am so fortunate to have bought you

thermos

Quick! Ones escaped out the door!

This is a poem my friend Jody Gardam wrote about helping out at a friend’s farm.

It’s a beautiful poem, So Aussie, So Jody 🙂

With the sound of the generator and the pouring rain,

I forget the hard work that’s about to begin

I am mesmerized watching the work of the shearer,

Thinking about the end of the day getting nearer

Sweeping the floor, learning the way,

Hearing new words that the shearers say

Gather up the fleece, toss it in the air,

hopefully landing it on the table, it takes some flair!

Counting the sheep, hearing the lambs,

The smell of the lanoline on my hands.

Quick! Ones escaped out the door!

Have to go corner it, catch it and bring it back to the floor.

Only a few left now, about eight or nine,

Still laughing and joking with these friends of mine.

Wool in the bales, on the floor and in my hair,

Every place you look, there’s wool everywhere!

My first day as a roustabout was memorable and fun,

But thank God its home time now and the day is done!

Writing Workshop

Today I attended a Newcomers Writing Workshop run by The Hunter Writers Centre. We talked a lot about different forms of writing, finding our own voice, practice exercises and ways to improve our writing.

We did a Memoir Exercise in which we had thirty minutes to write out a memory, then we read them aloud and dissected them as group. I really enjoyed hearing all the different things we’d all dredged up from our memories. The memory I picked out, well I’ve just posted it as its own post – http://sarahalison27.org/2014/02/01/learning-to-drive/

We did a Random Photo Exercise where a bunch of photos were spread out and we had fifteen minutes to write a short piece drawn from one of the photos. It took me awhile to pick a photo. The photo I did go with was of a man wearing a hat in a 1950’s style convertible automobile. I just focused on the guy and his hat >>>>

I slid down and slumped back into the cars seat. I was wearing a black bowler hat pulled down to partly obscure my face, but not so far down that I couldn’t see. I has hiding out in an anonymous looking black sedan with out of town number plates.

I was keeping tabs on a young girl named Audrey for my boss, she was his daughter. She didn’t like her father interfering with her life, so I was tasked with the job to tail her from time to time and keep tabs on who she was hanging out with

He was at her place again, that boy named Bob Brown. That filthy no good rat was harassing her again. I could see him through the window. I drove off. I’d report what I saw to my boss later tonight.

She was a lovely young girl, but she had terrible taste when it came to men. Her last boyfriend had put her in hospital, then my boss and I had put him in an underwater grave.

My boss was a powerful guy, not a fella to be messed with.

<<<< And that’s as far as I got.

I really did enjoy myself today and everyone there seemed to get something out of the workshop. Now I’ve just got to sit down and write out the scribbled notes and advice I took down and look into some of the things we talked about. I think I’ll definitely be joining the Prose group run by the HWC. Today was a fun, entertaining and interesting day :-).

Take me home

The clock is ticking

So fucking what

When did I ever care about that

They drag me down into their den

And I’ve got to try and claw my way out again

I click my heels together

A million times

Looks like they aren’t magic

These shoes of mine

My soul bleeds and bleeds until I’m bone dry

But why the fuck can’t I just die

I sit here

But no tears can I cry

Sit here and wonder why

Please world leave me the hell alone

Please heart take me home

Riley

A Poem to My Son.

The stars up above are shining bright, I will stay close by you till its light.

Though the daylight may lead me away, I’ll always come back, love works that way.

While you lay still and dream your dreams, Loves all around you, I’ll always be on your team.

How much I love, you’ll never know, but each and every day I’ll try to show.

A big strong boy into whom you shall grow, a long happy life you shall know.

Friends and adventures, you’ll have more than a few, awesomeness inside you I grew.

You’ll love Kittens, Rats, Puppies and Quails, in fact all animals, even the ones without a tail.

Trains, Planes, Cars and 4WD’s, you’ll use them all to travel wide.

No matter how far Riley you roam from home, you’ll always have love around you wherever you go.

Way out of bounds

I trusted you

You let me down

You hit one

Way out of bounds

My life, she fell apart

Split right through my heart

I can’t keep arguing with myself

Need to hate

Hate someone else

I trusted you

You let me down

You hit me

And knocked me to the ground

I can still hear you in my head

I can still feel you in my bed

To think of you hurts my brain

I’m think I’m going to go insane

I trusted you

You let me down

You hit one

Way out of bounds

I Love the Creek of Flowers

Free Association

Today’s Post asks us to write down the first words that come to mind when we hear – Home: Creek – Soil: Flowers – Rain: Love

It asks us to use these words in the title of our post.

So you say HOME, I say CREEK; I grew up next to Stoney Creek. Its bottoms not stoney these days, it’s all covered in muck, but my mother remembers swimming in it as a child when the water was a lot cleaner and the block of land she now lives on belonged to her grandmother. Really brave people still swim in it. My dad paddles it frequently in his kayak. Even though if it’s not in the best shape these days, it still is beautiful with some shrubbery still along its banks. I have many fond memories that where made along its banks and the sight of it resembles home in my mind nearly as much as my Mum and Dads house.

You say SOIL, I say FLOWERS; well I think the connection here is rather obvious. I love flowers and gardening, I’m not all that good at and don’t have much time or space these days for it. Whenever I’m out and about I always find myself looking at and admiring other people’s gardens. Maybe one day I’ll have a place where I can create my dream Garden.

You say RAIN, I say LOVE; I love rain! I love it when it rains. I love when it’s raining so hard at work you can’t hear anything over the roar from the tin workshop roof. I used to love it when it rained as I was walking home from school, I always walked slower when it was raining, made sure I got wet to the bone (yes my school bag was water proof, stress less) Swimming when it raining or there is a storm, I’m not quite sure that it’s very safe, but it’s awesome sensory fun. I always sleep better if it’s raining hard or there is a storm. At night I play rain and thunderstorm ambient music to help me sleep. A lot of my child hood memories of camping with my family it was raining and there was always MUD to be played in.
